Eye Surgery
well, we recieved some news on tuesday that we weren't thrilled about. we took caleb to the pediatric opthalmologist on tuesday for a follow-up appointment. we have been putting a patch on his good eye for almost 2 months now (one hour per day), so we were hoping for good news. instead, the doctor told us that his right eyelid seems to have no function and that if he continues not to use that eye, it will affect his vision in the future. she recommended surgery within the month. victor and i were pretty distraught about this and asked if there was any way to wait. she said that if we patch his eye for 2 hours each day, she would be ok with waiting 1 more month, but the surgery would still need to be done soon.
we were most upset to hear that he has no muscle function in that eyelid. because of that, he cannot have the "simpler" surgery to tighten the eyelid muscle (which also allows the eye to look and function normally). instead, he will need to have a material weaved through his eyelid and attached to his forehead muscle so that when he lifts his forehead, he can also lift his eyelid. with this procedure, his right eye will never look like his left eye (without cosmetic surgery in the future), and when he looks down or sleeps, it will not fully close.
we are definitely very thankful for our pediatric opthalmologist, though. dr. paysse was recommended to us by regina sun, my good friend who happens to be an opthalmologist resident. we feel fortunate that we know someone in the field who has worked with, and can recommend to us the best. we also feel fortnuate that we live in houston and have the resources of texas children's hospital. dr. paysse is actually the 2nd doctor we went to because we weren't impressed with the first one that we saw.
we are defnitely concerned and praying over what to do next. we are constantly reminded of how our faith is so small...
